Step 1. Login to your WordPress account.

Sign into your WordPress account to access your user Dashboard.

There are a couple of ways to log into your WordPress account, either directly by clicking here or through your WordPress hosting provider. For instance, I use SiteGround and sign into my WordPress website through them.

Step 2. Navigate to the post or page where you want to add a link.

Go to your user Dashboard to click on “Posts” or “Pages” to access your content.

Then, navigate to the post or page where you want to add a link.

For example purposes, I navigated to “Posts” to access one of my recent blog posts I did for Intensive Therapy for Kids.

Step 3. Highlight the text you want to turn into a link.

Open the “Post” or “Page” to highlight the text you want to link to.

Be sure to keep it relevant! You want to highlight text that correlates with an internal blog post you’ve written or to external content.

For instance, I highlighted the text “activities are a great way to help your child learn”, to link it to another blog post titled “Dr. Seuss Read Aloud” which is an activity to help a child learn.

Step 4. Click the “Link” button in the WordPress editor toolbar.

There are two ways to link to relevant content depending on the text editor you are using…

WordPress Classic Text Editor or WordPress Gutenberg Block Editor.

How do you know which WordPress editor you are using?

WordPress Gutenberg Editor

If you started your blog recently, you are most likely using the new interface design, WordPress Gutenberg Editor, which looks like this…

WordPress Classic Editor

If you started your blog a while ago or installed the Classic Editor plugin, you are most likely using the old interface design which looks like this…

No matter your circumstance here is how to find and click the “Link” button in each WordPress editor.

For WordPress Classic Text Editor, this is where you click the “Link” button.

After you enter the URL, click the “wheel” icon to open the window below and then click “Update”. Your URL is now added!

Personally, I always click “Open link in new tab” so my readers can access both posts at the same time; the blog post they are currently reading as well as the new URL they opened.

WordPress Gutenberg Block Editor

For WordPress Gutenberg Block Editor, here is where you enter the URL.

Again, after I enter a URL, I always click “Open in new tab” for my readers to have the best of both worlds; reading the current post and the new URL opened.

Once you enter the URL, click the arrow icon. Voila, your URL is now added!

If you’re curious about the other two tabs “mark as nofollow” vs “mark as sponsored”, here is the low down…

  • If you decide to click “Search engines should ignore this link (mark as nofollow)” it means the link you are inserting is allowed to be crawled by the search engines but you aren’t passing off your own juices.
  • If you decide to click “This is a sponsored link or advert (mark as sponsored)” it means it’s a paid link, you receive money if someone clicks on this link.

To Wrap It Up

Adding links to your WordPress blog posts benefits your content AND your readers in several ways:

  • Adds MORE value!
  • Provides MORE information on the topic at hand
  • Increases engagement
  • Improves your blog’s search engine optimization (SEO)

Links are an essential part of SEO because they allow search engines like Google to crawl and index your content. This means that by adding links to your blog post, you’re making it easier for people and search engines to find and read your content.

And the best part? It’s simple to do!

I hope this article helped you out with how to add links to WordPress.
